Designing an optical component to be agile in the wavelength domain is more challenging than designing it for a specific wavelength. The cornerstone components in optical networking are lasers (sources), wavelength-selective devices (e.g., filters, gratings) and detectors (receivers). Of these, only the detector is intrinsically able to operate over a number of different wavelengths (though there is no intrinsic ability to select a specific wavelength). Much of the work in optical components has been aimed at creating tunable lasers and wavelength-selective devices. |
